Beanstalk Project
Beanstalk Project

Long Story Short
Problem
We set out to tackle the wicked problem of how we might enable people to adopt lower-ecological-footprint lifestyle changes amid a cost-of-living crisis, where financial pressures often make sustainable choices feel out of reach. Through ethnographic research, user interviews, and systems mapping, we identified barriers including cost perception, lack of accessible guidance, and disconnect between values and daily behaviours.
Solution
By using co-creation workshops, journey mapping, and iterative prototyping, we designed a service ecosystem for Beanstalk that combined affordable, practical tips with community-driven support and an inclusive digital platform, empowering users to make small, sustainable shifts without added financial burden.

Problem Scope
How might we encourage lower ecological footprint lifestyle changes amid the cost of living crisis?
The cost of living crisis in the UL is at the forefront of most citizens concerns who are now struggling to afford living.
Shelter reports that "almost 2.5 million renters are either behind or constantly struggling to pay their rent - an increase of 25% since April 2022".
For this project, an understanding of the big picture issue will be shown as well as considering how people make decisions around budget, lifestyle and sustainability.

Discover
Primary and secondary research included a survey and semi-structured interviews to gather insights about the motivations of climate change, the cost of living crisis, and sustainable methods of buying food.

Define
The Five Whys, 4 Ws, decision matrix and persona communicated the insights gathered about young adults lack of motivation, time and resources. Connections found between developing accessible, sustainable habits and following trends by peers.

Develop
The development phase produced a lo-fi prototype, service blueprint, stakeholder map, and business model canvas.

Deliver
Hi-fi prototypes were created to communicate the proposed solution along with a video prototype and story board. Additionally, an evaluation plan was presented to suggest the development and testing of the service.

Solution
The final solution delivers a way for customers to engage in convenient, sustainable actions that bring communities and businesses together to make a bigger impact. Through the development of a mobile app that allows users to sign up and engage in sustainable actions set out by the local shops and grocers, in which the user receives points for the actions.
